No-Sew Starfish Free Crochet Pattern

Nothing screams summer quite like a vibrant, adorable starfish! This pattern requires zero sewing, making it the perfect market-prepping project.

And if you want a fun little star, simply remove the puff stitches and replace them with single crochet! In the past I've even used these as Christmas tree stars...👀🤭

Materials 

  • Premier “Parfait Chunky” bulky weight #6 yarn
    • MC: Azure, CC: Light Blue
  • US size 8 (5 mm) crochet hook
  • (2) 14 mm safety eyes
  • Polyfill
  • Scissors
  • Stitch marker
  • Tapestry needle

 

Pattern Notes 

  • This pattern is written in US terms and Imperial measurements.
  • Pattern is worked from the bottom up. 
  • Pattern is worked in continuous rounds without joining unless otherwise stated.
  • Use a stitch marker to mark the beginning of round. Move the marker up each round

Change Color: to change color, insert hook into stitch and pull up a loop, complete stitch by pulling new color through both loops on hook.

  • inc – 2 sc in same stitch
  • MC – Main Color
  • sc – single crochet
  • sk –skip
  • sl st – slip stitch

Special Stitches

Puff Stitch (ps): [yarn over, insert your hook into the stitch and pull up a loop] three times, yarn over and pull through all (7) loops on hook.

Invisible Decrease (inv dec): [Insert your hook into the front loop of the next stitch and pull up a loop] twice, yarn over and pull through all loops on hook.

 

Pattern Instructions 

Body

With MC,

Round 1 – sc 5 in a magic ring (5)

Round 2 – [inc] 5 times(10)

Round 3 – [sc 1, inc] 5 times (15)

Round 4 – [sc 2, inc] 5 times (20)

Round 5 – [sc 3, inc] 5 times (25)

Round 6 – [sc 4, inc] 5 times (30)

Round 7 – [sc 5, inc] 5 times (35)

Round 8 – [ch 6, sk 6, sc 1] 5 times (35)

Round 9 – [sc 5, inv dec] 5 times (30)

Round 10 – [sc 4, inv dec] 5 times (25)

Round 11 – [sc 3, inv dec] 5 times (20)

Round 12 – [sc 2, inv dec] 5 times (15)

Round 13 – [sc 1, inv dec] 5 times (10)

Attach safety eyes between rounds 3 and 4, (6) sts apart. Center the eyes with a hole directly above. Begin stuffing.

Round 14 – [inv dec] 5 times (5)

FO, leaving an 8 in (20 cm) tail for closing. To close hole, using tapestry needle and tail, insert needle into FLO of each stitch of round 14. Pull tail to close, weave in tail.

Arms (make 5)

Arms will be worked into each hole on the body. Stuff each arm as you go.

 With MC,

Round 1 sc 12

Instructions in bold indicate where to change to CC.

Round 2 – sc 3, ps, sc 8 (12)

Round 3 [sc 2, inv dec] 3 times(9)

Round 4 sc 3, ps, sc 5 (9)

Round 5 [sc 1, inv dec] 3 times (6)

Round 6 sc 2, ps, sc 3 (6)

FO, leaving an 8 in (20 cm) tail for closing. To close hole, using tapestry needle and tail, insert needle into FLO of each stitch of round 6. Pull tail to close, sew any gaps between each arm closed and weave in ends.
