Classic Pumpkin Free Crochet Pattern

Crochet pumpkins are, by far, my favorite fall decor to make. You get all of the cuteness of a pumpkin year after year... and you never have to worry about it rotting! Grab a variety of autumnal yarns and create your own army of pumpkins with this quick and easy pattern designed by yours truly. Happy crocheting!

Materials 

  • Premier “Parfait Chunky” super bulky weight #6 yarn [100% polyester, 131 yards/ 120 m per 100g skein]; colors: Carrot (Orange), Goblin (Green)
  • US size 7 (4.5 mm) crochet hook
  • Polyfill
  • Scissors
  • Stitch marker
  • Tapestry needle


Pattern Notes

-This pattern is written in US terms and Imperial measurements.

-Body of pattern is worked from the bottom up.

-Pattern is worked in continuous rounds without joining unless otherwise stated.

-Use a stitch marker to mark the beginning of round. Move the marker up each round.

Change Color: to change color, insert hook into stitch and pull up a loop, complete stitch by pulling new color through both loops on hook.

  • ch – chain
  • FO - Fasten Off
  • inc – 2 sc in same stitch
  • sc – single crochet 
  • st(s) – stitch(es)


Special Stitches 

Invisible Decrease (inv dec): [Insert your hook into the front loop of the next two stitches and pull up a loop,  yarn over and pull through both loops on hook.

 

Pattern Instructions 

Pumpkin Base 

With (Orange),  

Round 1 - sc 8 in a magic ring (8)

Round 2 - [inc] 8 times (16)

Round 3 - [sc 1, inc] 8 times (24)

Round 4 - [sc 2, inc] 8 times (32)

Round 5 - [sc 3, inc] 8 times (40)

Round 6 - [sc 4, inc] 8 times (48)

Round 7 - [sc 5, inc] 8 times (56)

Rounds 8-17 -  sc around (56) (10 rounds)

Round 18 - [sc 5, inv dec] 8 times (48)

Round 19 - [sc 4, inv dec] 8 times (40) 

Round 20 - [sc 3, inv dec] 8 times (32)

Round 21 - [sc 2, inv dec] 8 times (24)

Begin stuffing firmly

Round 22 - [sc 1,  inv dec] 8 times (16)

Round 23 - [inv dec] 8 times (8)

Finish stuffing and FO, leaving a 12 in (30 cm) tail. To close hole, using tapestry needle and tail, insert needle into FLO of each stitch of round 16. Pull tail to close. Continue on to pumpkin shaping. 


Pumpkin Shaping 

Using the remaining yarn tail, feed yarn through the center of the pumpkin and out through the bottom. 

Feed yarn along the outside of the pumpkin and back through the center, pulling tight as you go. Repeat for a total of 8 ribs. 


Stem

With (Green), 

Round 1 - sc 6 in a magic ring (6)

Rounds 2-4 - sc around (6) (3 rounds)

Round 5 - [sc 1, inc] 3 times (9)

Round 6 - sc around (9)

Vine will be worked in Round 7

Round 7 - ch 10, starting in 2nd ch from hook [inc] 9 times, sc 9 (27)

Stuff lightly and FO, leaving an 8 in (20 cm) tail for sewing. Sew the stem to the top of the pumpkin, approx. R21 of the pumpkin. Weave in ends.
